John R. Ames was elected Dallas County Tax Assessor-Collector in 2008, and has been re-elected three times based on a strong track record of administrative excellence. Over the span of his award-winning career, Ames has brought efficiency, fairness and innovation to the Dallas County Tax Office.
Ames has dramatically improved customer service and achieved a collections efficiency rate of over 99%, which is a record for Dallas County. His work has maximized funding for a range of critical county, city and school services such as healthcare, infrastructure, public safety and the justice system.
Ames refunded millions of dollars back to taxpayers as one of the first tasks he accomplished. He has created a team that focuses on efficiency and fairness to all taxpayers and provides multiple payment channels and several payment plan options. Ames is a frequent speaker at town hall and community events educating citizens about the tax system and their rights.
Ames is a respected leader in the Texas tax profession who is dedicated to keeping up with the latest innovations. He has earned a reputation for making the Dallas County Tax Office a model for others throughout the state. He holds many professional certifications including a Professional County Assessor Collector, which is the highest certification obtainable in the property tax industry. He is active in statewide tax matters, working with state partners and the legislature to improve processes within the tax office. He is a past-president of the Tax Assessor Collector Association of Texas and has served in leadership capacities for the Property Tax Education Coalition, Texas School Assessors Association and the Texas Association of Counties.
